Credit Card Education Guide

Getting the Most Out of Your Credit Card

The general attitude towards credit cards is often negative, because the media loves to write about horror stories from consumers that did not know how to control their spending and used their credit cards to pay for things they could not afford.

What the media never tells you about are the thousands of people that use their credit cards wisely every day and make sure to avoid finance charges even though it could help many people to discover credit cards and the benefits associated with them.

If you prefer to use credit cards over cash, because of the many potential advantages, it is essential to find the right credit card. Sorting through all the credit cards offers can be a complicated task, but when the rewards are low APR credit cards, gas rebates up to 10%, cash back credit cards with 5% on everyday purchases and lots of other credit card rewards, the search for the best credit card is worth the effort.

Pay off your credit card balance in full every month

Every major credit card issuer offer a grace period on all their purchases, which means you won´t begin to accrue any interest on your purchases until the credit card bill is past due. The grace period can vary depending on the card issuer, but you are usually given around 20 days to pay off your balance from the day the statement was issued.

Preparing yourself for a worst case scenario where you may end up in a situation that makes you unable to pay off the balance in full can be beneficial. The risks of sudden unemployment or unexpected medical expenses are always present and that is where low APR credit cards can play an important role. Shop around and compare the credit cards with the lowest interest rates. If you already own credit cards and your interest rates are increased, don´t hesitate to switch to another credit card company.

Credit card rewards

Always choose a credit card that offer rewards that you know you will use. There are cash back credit cards available that apply a statement credit every month for the amount of cash back earned, but frequent travelers could get more out of a credit card that offer airline miles or free nights at a three or four star hotel.

Pay household bills by credit card

You may already have set up a direct debit from your bank account or pay by check because that used to be the most common payment method and is mentioned on the bill, but changing to a credit card payment on your household bills, which is one of the bigger expenses in a family´s budget means higher cash back rewards. You can typically find out if they accept credit card payments by logging into your account on the creditor´s website.

Use more than one credit card

You will never find a credit card that has the best offer in every aspect of credit card comparison. There is nothing that prevents you from carrying more than one card in your wallet and it is a great way to maximize your rewards, since certain credit cards give higher rewards for select purchases. However don´t use too many credit cards either or it can be difficult to reach the redemption minimum for some reward credit cards, particularly the airline miles credit cards and hotel credit cards.
