How to Apply for a Credit Card
Your Credit History
The issuers consider your credit history as the most important factor when making a decision on your credit card application.
If you have excellent credit you have a good chance to get approved for any card you apply for. Take advantage of this by applying for the credit cards with the best rewards, lowest interest rates, and longest introductory offers.
If you have no credit history that means fewer unsecured credit cards to choose from. You can build or reestablish your credit history with secured credit cards that report to the major credit bureaus or if you just want the convenience of a credit card you can choose a prepaid credit card.
Credit bureaus will give you a free copy of your credit report if you have been denied credit in the last 60 days. You can also sign up for a free trial of credit monitoring that includes your credit report and score.
Your Credit Card Balances
Consider if you will be able to pay off the outstanding balances in full each month. If you carry a balance you will be best off with a low interest credit card, but if you expect to pay the credit card bill in full a rewards credit card is a good choice regardless of the interest rate.
If you already have a credit card debt that you are determined to pay off, then a 0% APR credit card may be the best choice. With an introductory rate of 0% for 12 months for balance transfers you will be able to save a lot of money on interest and you still have the option of a new credit card after 12 month if you think the standard rate is too high.
Your lifestyle
There are credit cards that give additional rewards for certain types of spending. Consider your spending habits when looking for the right credit card.
Homeowners can earn rewards towards a mortgage payment by using the right credit card for gas and groceries. Paying utility bills with your credit card also add up the rewards significantly.
Frequent travelers can earn bonus points or miles every time they travel and they also have the option of rewards program that allow for redemption of any airline, hotel, car rental and more.
Submitting Your Application
Understand the terms and conditions that are associated with the new credit card. Be aware of the penalty fees you could be charged you could incur if you are late on the payment or exceeding the credit limit.
Be truthful when you fill out the credit card application form. If the credit card company finds out that the information you gave them is false, your application will not be approved.
